Feedstuff and what constitutes a ration

This course is part of the Fundaments of Feedlot Nutrition, Feeding and Milling Operations learning path. 

 

Being part of the feeding and milling team it is important to understand the regulated standards and practices our industry is subjected to. Understanding why you do what you do, but also the impact you have in your feedlot and ultimately to wider grain fed industry.

Completing this course provides you with the technical knowledge and operational skills to operate effectively, safely and efficiently at the feedlot, as well as provides a basis from which you can maintain and build your career in the Australian Feedlot industry.

Objectives

Learning outcomes and competencies
By the end of this course, you will know how to: 

  • Explain what grain fed beef is, why we grain feed cattle and the benefits for grain fed beef production
  • Identify the impact of the feeding and milling processes on cattle, your feedlot, industry and the consumer
  • Discuss the role of each commodity in the ration batch and how to ensure it’s suitable for cattle consumption
  • Discuss the importance of energy in a ration, how it effects cattle production and how we can modify energy availability through grain processing.
  • Outline the importance of grain
  • Explain the importance of grain processing, the structure of grain and how cattle digest feed.
