This course is part of the Pen Riding: Mastering the Fundamentals online skills training Explore the fundamental principles of pen riding in this online course, and discover how to prioritise cattle health and wellbeing, effectively identify issues and use low-stress handling techniques to positively influence welfare outcomes for the cattle at your feedlot. This online course covers the core principles of pen riding. After completion of the online training, an on the ground competency assessment is available so you can demonstrate your skills and competency in this area. Feedlots are professional purpose-build facilities that use complex systems to feed cattle to produce grain fed beef. This module will introduce you to the grain fed beef production system and provide background on the product's unique attributes. Completing this course will: Teach you about the Australian lot feeding industry. Provide an understanding grain fed beef attributes. Help you to understand the complexities of the grain fed beef production system that cares for cattle and the environment. Provide an insight into feedlot career pathways. The maintenance team ensures the daily upkeep of the entire feedlot. This can involve vehicle and equipment maintenance, and improvements to pens, roads and infrastructure. We will explore the foundations of feedlot maintenance practices, enabling you to prevent issues, minimise downtime and uphold safety standards. This module will cover: Understanding the importance of proactive maintenance for feeding, water systems, and pens. Clarifying the roles and responsibilities within the maintenance team. Reporting and escalating maintenance issues effectively. Identifying and addressing key areas requiring maintenance, such as feeding equipment, water troughs, and roads. Implementing safe practices in feedlot maintenance, including hazard awareness and injury prevention. Selecting and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Preparing for emergencies with effective response protocols and first aid practices. Developing preventative maintenance schedules to extend equipment lifespan and improve reliability. Budgeting for maintenance to balance routine costs and unexpected repairs. Read more

This course covers the fundamental aspects of Lairage for cattle. It will develop your understanding of lairage and how the actions and decisions of each person involved in the supply chain, including feedlot staff, can influence this stage.
